If I can manage it, I want my core four to be on the coast, and in range of the Capital, because if I can get that, then I know that I'll be able to burn down any AI city that's in the way of other resources I want, and there won't be anything they can do about it (I routinely have 3x-4x the productive capacity of my rivals just a few turns after getting Metal Casting.at that rate, even if I lose troops, which is rare, I can replace my losses so much more quickly that it wouldn't matter). And of course, since pop drives science, you can tweak your routes to grow all your cities to massive size in the blink of an eye, taking quick advantage of all the best tiles in each city site amazingly quickly.the AI just never stands a chance.įor this reason, if at all possible, even if I have to pack 'em in tighter than I would like.even if I have to ignore some juicy specials in the interior of the continent, I'm extremely reluctant to build non-coastal cities until the mid-game.

I like to reconfigure my trade routes on a pretty regular basis (something of a metagame in and of itself), sending massive hammers to whatever city is currently building an expensive thing, growing a target city insanely fast, immediately after founding, then switching from food to hammers to help it build stuff along the way.īuilding both Colossus and Petra will give you an extra trade route each, which just makes it even more insane. Any coastal city (even without fishing specials) is worth a minimum of +8 food or + 8 hammers, if you reconfigure your trade routes and keep them internal.įour cities, all on the coast, and your three tributary cities within 20 tiles of the capital, and you can have +24 hammers, or +24 food per turn, streaming into the Capital, just making it grow ridiculously fast (of course, once you build the Ironworks (+8 more hammers) and snag the Hanging Gardens (another +6 food), it just makes things even sillier). Early on, when money's tight, if I use 'em at all, I tend to go for the money, but Metal Casting is easily the most pivotal tech in the game.basically, whoever gets there first, wins. They essentially allow you to turn your Civ on a dime and do some utterly game-breaking things. (and of course, every military unit I ever built paid a quick visit to the mountain to get the same treatment.lol)įor me, the biggest, most unbalanced thing about the game (Brave New World expansion) are the trade routes. Was playing King but it might as well have been Chieftain,at that point. Kilimanjaro, which provides a bonus to any combat unit that walks near it (Mountaineering, treats hills as roads).īoth of my Pathfinder units got upgraded to Composite Bowmen (also from ruins) and we were basically a T-Rex for the rest of the game (2800 BC, and I've got two wrecking ball composite bowmen who can traverse rough terrain like roads and still fire - we basically laid waste to everybody around us).

The other day, I played a SICK game with the Shoshone - did as described above, got Writing from a ruin, so built the Great Library heinously early (Philosophy for the free tech to get the Nat College for cheap, with just the one city) AND I was near Mt. So - stuff like that makes it a somewhat limiting game, but I still enjoy it, because I like tweaking my strategy to perfection. * Always take pottery as first research (unlocks 3 2nd tier techs, making it more likely to get a T2 tech from a ruin) - and since about half your ancient era techs will wind up coming from ruins, it's just a no brainer.

* Always maximize hammer counts on your first city, on founding, even at the expense of the short term growth - you can make up for it (easily) by getting a scout out fast and getting pop from ruins - plus a fast first worker for tile improvements)

There's definitely one "right" way to play Civ V.one way that delivers results that are consistently better than any other option (for instance, some truisms in Civ V: :)įor me, what Civ V comes down to is a puzzle. I've played EU 2 and 3, and found them to be.sublime. I've not played Warlock yet, but I think that's one I've got my eye on for the next Steam summer sale.
